Professional development literature consistently states that coaching activities are crucial in ensuring staff skill acquisition and the effective implementation of approaches. Based on this research, agencies should require supervisors to participate in coaching and collaborative problem-solving with staff. It is important that supervisors understand that successful coaching and problem-solving facilitation involve providing leadership without taking control, building the capacity of the team to engage in problem-solving processes, and addressing team dynamics, such as conflict resolution and decision making.
Supervisors should consistently provide both group and individual (one-on-one) supervision. The employee should be given the opportunity to share and discuss any concerns and performance issues that he/she may have experienced, as well as to request additional training.
